The world fell in love with Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová when their songwriting collaboration in the film Once culminated in a jubilant Oscar win. But behind the scenes, where Glen and Mar’s on-screen romance became reality, a grueling two-year world tour threatens to fracture their fated bond. Gorgeously filmed in black and white, this music-filled documentary is an intimate look at the exhilaration and turmoil created by both love and fame.
In an idea that came to fruition in the beginning of 2010 in Hong Kong, POW WOW was created as an exhibition of creative talents which stressed more so the background and development of art. As opposed to the often seen focus on the finished product, POW WOW set forth in giving the public access to artists in their element as they went to work on their respective pieces. In this series, we take a look at POW WOW 2011 which took place in founder Jasper Wong’s native Hawai’i and the comprehensive process that surrounded the event. While Hawai’i has had its fair share of creative output, POW WOW has represented the island’s most concentrated effort to help push and build the local artistic community. A Kickstarter page has recently been started in anticipation of next year’s 2012 event, and donations can be made at kickstarter.com/projects/jasperwong/pow-wow-hawaii-2012.
Graphic designer and custom chalk letterer Dana Tanamachi just finished this mural on a wall in Ace Hotel New York room 1021. She was inspired by vintage playbills from the Victorian era, and included a lyric from her favorite musical, “Thoroughly Modern Millie”.
Power to the People is a wine made from a 2009 harvest of Californian syrah grapes from two premium vineyards: Thompson Vineyard and McGinley Vineyard. The result is the first commercial release of wine from Shirah Wine Co., a small California-based winery that sources premium fruit from Californian vineyards to produce very exclusive kosher wines – one of the few wineries that specialize in this niche offering.
Miller Creative was called upon to create an elegant, yet powerful look for the wine, which has full-bodied fruit flavors and a complex character. We thought the name “Power to the People”, evoked old propaganda posters. A bold fist crushing grapes in its grip sits in the center, with the classic propaganda rays and Soviet-style typography. Various visual references to wine and Judaism embellish this intricate label.
In ANOTHER EARTH, Rhoda Williams (Brit Marling), a bright young woman accepted into MIT’s astrophysics program, aspires to explore the cosmos. A brilliant composer, John Burroughs (William Mapother), has just reached the pinnacle of his profession and is about to have a second child. On the eve of the discovery of a duplicate Earth, tragedy strikes and the lives of these strangers become irrevocably intertwined.
MTV Brazil with ad agency Loducca Sao Paulo have created an ingenious new promo ad campaign titled ‘Balloons’ for their South American TV market. Similar to flip book animation, the clever ad utilizes a low tech yet inventive animation technique where a traveling spike pops hundreds of balloons along a track. Their actual stick figure animation is not only very inventive but also very entertaining, as the cool story starts off with a simple egg and leads to record contracts and Slash morphing into Eminem.
In 2010, Swarovski enlisted multimedia artist, photographer, and director Bruno Aveillan to make a cinema spot with them that would conjure Swarovski’s more than one-hundred-year heritage on the big screen. Propelled by the vision of using film as a medium for conveying Swarovski’s charisma and grace and mastery of light, as well as a portrait of the spirit of crystal and beyond, the team ventured to Turkey, traveling from Istanbul to a salt lake outside of Ankara. There, they began filming what was to become a tale of brilliance and movement. The result is a beautiful, powerful, and unique cinematic work that will amaze and delight cinema audiences.
Artist Steve Thomas has made a series of propaganda posters for office use, covering such Glorious Management-disapproved activities as water cooler gossip and social media during company time. Strip the propaganda trappings and a lot of these are good advice.

The Urban Quiver is made for use as a day excursion pack. When designing this bag, we opted to create something different, that didn’t look like a typical, bulky (nerdy) camera bag. For starters, the tubular shape holds camera gear more efficiently, taking into consideration the fact that camera gear is long and shaped like our design. Second, the chance of theft is lowered because we didn’t design this to look like a camera bag, and the main compartment is unable to be accessed while you’re wearing the bag. This is a great feature to have when standing in large crowds, riding public transportation or for those times when you don’t want to look like a tourist.
Amongst Giants is a project crafted by composer and producer, Matthias Hacksteiner. All songs have been composed and mixed by him and were recorded in Salzburg and Munich with eleven studio musicians.
